Sorry for the long gaps between posts. The nightlife in the city sometimes gets a hold of you for a couple day stretch and you lose touch of everyday things. Like posting on the blog or catching up with e-mails.
Anyway...
These pictures come from Sokcho, at Daepo Harbor. It is a neat street that borders a harbor and it is loaded with I would say 50-100 street shops. All these street shops are live fish, crab, mollusks and things you don't want to know the name of. Near the end of the street people have "restaurants" which are just a half sized burn barrel with this metal grate on top. You pick out your fresh mollusks, or the large pink "o-jing-eo sundae"..It is the large pink squid in the first picture. It is a squid, hallowed out, then stuffed with squid, rice, other land animal parts and a little bit of who knows what. The closest thing I can related it to is a crab cake, but not really haha.
Well the process goes as such, you pick a platter of food from the selection in the first picture. Then a very nice woman puts them all on the grill and the clams and scallops start to scream as they are being cooked alive. She then rips off the shells and continues to grill them up . The first
thing that was ready was the tasty fish. The weird thing was there was like this pouch of grill eggs where the head would be. Tasted ok at best but the fish meat was great. So the clams and shrimp were all amazing, as fresh as you can get. There was one huge mussel looking thing, not sure what they are called but they added sauces to it and let that one stew a while.
The final thing we tried was the ojingeo sundae. They chop it up into sushi looking pieces then grill them in a pan. You get a nice scallop shell as a spoon and you eat them up. Actually very yummy.
We loved this spot we came two days in a row. The owner was so happy to see us again we got some extra clams and shrimp. Free = service-e.
I really would like to be there with you. It sounds so fun and the amazing food!
