Great Great Wall

The Great Wall of China is simply that Great! We took a day long tour out to the Great Wall, it is about 2 hours outside of Beijing, and there are four different areas you can visit. The section we visited was the Mutianyu Great Wall. It has 20 watch towers, about half of which you can go on the roof, check out the best views. This section also connects with the very original section of the wall. This section was "off limits" to the average tourist. We we not the average tourist though and we were able to stand and hangout on the very original section of wall. It was amazing to see the thing winding up and down the mountain side, always on the peaks of the mountain. Watch towers every so often, cannons here and there pretty amazing.
This first picture is a small example of the thousands of steps we had to climb there. There were tons of steps, no 2 steps in a row were the same size, depth, or height so it was an interesting hike to say the least.
The second picture was probably the nicest guys we met. All he wanted was for us to have fun, take some good pictures. We bought some much needed ice cold water from him and thanked him for a great picture.
The third picture is from the original section of the wall, looking out in 2 directions you can see the Wall for miles and miles. To my right out of the picture the mountains were getting larger and larger and you could still see it ever so faintly but it was up there watch towers and all.
The last picture is my favorite for several reasons. One, it is a great view and it really captures the Great Wall. Two, we had to hike up like a thousand steps as steep as a dang ladder to get up there. It was the highest section we could travel, all the way to watch tower #20. Three, well its just a cool picture and now my background on my laptop.

  1. Hey Phillip,
I love seeing these pictures. It's incredible to think of how old so many things are in China and how young our country is. When I watched the video you did of the crowded streets I just shook my head because I find it hard to believe sometimes that you are really on the other side of the world. I'm so jealous. Keep experiencing (within reason) everything good out there. Be safe Love you Mom

  2. Truly amazing! The pictures look just like National Geographic. You picked a great one for your laptop. But after the pictures of the crowds in Beijing this area looks deserted. And mostly tourists? Was it expensive to visit or are the locals not interested. But the Great Wall is one of the great wonders of the world and I am very excited that you were able to see it (and jealous that I was not!!!). Quick question: What's on your backpack?

  3. The Great Wall was busy, but not overwhelming. There is a section that is closer to the city and apparently it is packed with people. This one is farther, prettier, and joins the original section. Worth the extra drive, I slept the whole way anyway haha. It was about $75 or so, including the bus ride from the hostel.
That is a Kappa bag, Italian soccer company. Logo is a guy and girl back to back.
